چکیده
Call for Papers Hurricane Katrina (2005) devastated New Orleans thereby revealing inherent vulnerabilities that resided in the socio/political/ecological/technical infrastructure (system) of the city and the nation. The event highlighted the ‘...city’s fragile physical environment, aging infrastructure, and declining economic and social structure’ (Comfort, 2006:1). Comfort (2006:2) asks the question ‘...Was the damage in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina, or was it some combination of human and technical factors that failed under the stress of the hurricane?’ Similarly, events such as Hurricane Sandy (2012) and the Alberta Floods (2013) resulted in devastating effects to the New York City region and the Province of Alberta respectively.

متن کاملBunched black (and grouped grey) swans: Dissipative and non-dissipative models of correlated extreme fluctuations in complex geosystems
[1] I review the hierarchy of approaches to complex systems, focusing particularly on stochastic equations. I discuss how the main models advocated by the late Benoit Mandelbrot fit into this classification, and how they continue to contribute to cross-disciplinary approaches to the increasingly important problems of correlated extreme events and unresolved scales. The ideas have broad importan...
متن کاملPopulation, Behavioural and Physiological Responses of an Urban Population of Black Swans to an Intense Annual Noise Event
Wild animals in urban environments are exposed to a broad range of human activities that have the potential to disturb their life history and behaviour. Wildlife responses to disturbance can range from emigration to modified behaviour, or elevated stress, but these responses are rarely evaluated in concert. We simultaneously examined population, behavioural and hormonal responses of an urban po...
متن کاملThe foundations of statistics with black swans
We extend the foundation of statistics to integrate rare events that are potentially catastrophic, called black swans. These include natural hazards, regime change in complex systems, market crashes, catastrophic climate change and major episodes of species extinction. Classic statistics and physics treat such events as ‘outliers’ and often disregard them. We propose a new axiomatization of subj...
متن کاملBlack Swans and white tablets
The Black Swan, a metaphor for highly improbable, high impact events, warns us to understand the limits of our predictions and expect the “unknown unknowns” everywhere, from war to science and industry. From the earliest stages of discovery to post-marketing events, we argue that fundamentally the structure of pharmaceutical industry is driven by and impacted by both positive and negative Black...
